Your dog and prevention of illness

Today pet owning has evolved greatly over the last 30 years. There was a time when a tin of dog food and maybe the odd dose of vitamins was the norm to keep a pet healthy.

Today vets and breeders are doing and advising very different practices in keeping your dog as healthy as possible. Some of the advice strikes us a little eccentric but they are the experts so we pass on their practices to you.
Believe it or not serving raw vegetables is quite common among breeders, the vitamin advantages are obvious so why not.   The challenge may be in getting them to actually eat this, but if introduced early enough then it should be doable, just note that this is only done in small quantities in proportion to the meat side of their diet.
Serving green tea to your dog.   Now this is a shock to us but green tea served cold is a great way of giving your dog healthier teeth as it naturally removes tartar build up on the teeth.
For the skin, try to introduce oily fish like salmon and mackerel (with no bones) or cooked eggs (never raw). This is packed with omega 3 which not only maintains  strong healthy skin but assists in fighting various cancers.
These fish oils are also good for their joints, as are walnuts, cranberries, gooseberries and raspberries. This might all sound vaguely strange but we stress that these are being used by breeders to maintain healthier dogs and the up-side is that it is clearly resulting in a healthier dog for longer and avoidance of expensive vet bills.
