What can your Dog actually eat?
The olden days dictated that you fed your puppy whatever brand of dog food had the most appealing advert and that was that.
It was cheap, simple and required no thought from yourself any more than noting what flavour went in the shopping basket, (making sure you had a bit of variety).
Of course things move on and the standards have improved greatly and now the rhetoric coming from veterinary sources leans ever more towards insisting on a "balanced diet" so what does this actually mean in practice. Well our research shows that there are any number of items that can be freely fed to your pet in this endeavour. Of course the stable is going to remain a good quality dog food topped off with an equally good quality dry food. But don't be afraid to "treat" your pet regularly, if for no other reason than the extra vitamins and minerals will stave off the vet and their bills for that much longer.
First thing to say about meat is that it needs to be as lean as possible, don't give your dog fat. And always chopped finely as dogs are not great chewers, chopping ensures it's properly digested.
They can eat fish but beware of bones, they can chock easily. But note that smoked or salted fish is best not fed to dogs as its salt base can dehydrate more easily than people. Don't give your dog salted products.
Watch out for starchy foods as this can cause diarrhoea in dogs, let over pastas, potatoes and rice is best avoided.
Milk is fine for puppies but bad for dogs they tend to store this as fat so try and avoid.
The subject of fruits and vegetables is a strange one, I find it hard to imagine a dog willingly chomping on anything from this groups but the formal advise is if they do then that's fine, just not in excess.
Yellow cheeses is fine also as it's an excellent source of calcium but go easy as, like milk, it will store that fat.
Finally chocolate, always very good for rewarding them but don't forget it has a level of sugar that in certain amounts will destroy their liver, cause hyperactivity and of course fatty acids to develop faster than any other food out there. The advice is go small amounts of dark chocolate if you must as it has more omega 3 and 6 in which is good for them.
