Sit command

Training your dog can seem a bit daunting if you have never done it before. You begin the training, and realise for the first time that you are talking to an animal and what is more, expecting that animal to understand.

Many owners confess to feeling a little between helplessness and ridiculous as they endeavour to start training.
But here we offer a few points to make it feel easier.
Just start with one command "sit".

There are actually 3 ways to issue this command, verbally, with a hand signal, and slightly less commonly a tug on the leash. (but we don't actually like this one as it is too vague).

To start with stand in front of your pet and make sure eye contact is never broken. It is good to indicate that you have a treat in you hand.

All the rules for issuing commands are described in the article: "How to issue Commands."
When giving the command verbally don't shout it or be too gentle,  just be clear and firm. Of course the first few times your dog will more than likely stare at you.  If he/she tilts its head at an angle that is a good sign as it shows he/she is listening to you and very curious about what you are doing.
More than likely you will have to manoeuvre it to actually sit. But this is fine as this will increase their ability to link the word to the final position they are expected to be in.  It really is that simple. Rinse and repeat as they say.
Just make sure that any time the final position is achieved lavish your pet with praise and remember DO NOT punish if they don't follow your commands. Some take more time than others.
