Ear Problems

One of the most common medical issues dogs suffer and ranking as the more severe are ear infections.

More common with the breeds  having long droopy ears, like the cocker spaniel.  Most breeds suffer from ear problems as they get older but it can be avoided or reduced just by being careful and visual.
Basically, by the owner being careful and tracking any issues, you can avoid any serious problems that result in expensive vet's bills or other more tragic problems.
Here is what every dog owner, regardless of the breed, needs to be doing.
1.  Check your dogs ears at least once a week, maybe more as it gets older.   If you notice any unpleasant material building up then that could be a problem, or any strange and unpleasant smells, this too could be a  problem.   Make sure you are cleaning the ears once a week.
2. Make sure you carefully trim the hairs in the ears as much as possible, this is usually where bacteria get a foot hold and problems start.
3. Clean regularly using a dry piece of cotton wool. But go deep as you can without causing pain or discomfort to your dog.
4. Once every 10 days do a wet clean. Same method a s a dry clean, but make sure when you finish you pat down the ear to leave it dry.
5. Lastly beware that the first major issues most dogs suffer from is in the ears, so be ready to go to the vets at the first sign of any problems, don't wait or be over relaxed about an issue thinking it will sort its self out; it will not.
